- Leave An Inch at the Top of the Box – Leaving an inch of space at the top of the box doesn’t count as the protective layer of paper you have at the top of the box. Leave an actual inch of space between your packing material and the top of the box because if a heavier box happens to be placed on the fragile items box this will allow for an extra precautionary cushion.
