The moment this sets in can be pretty overwhelming knowing you have to pack up all of your belongings and somehow get them to your new place. Although hiring professional movers is a great thing to do, especially for your larger household items, packing up your smaller things piece by piece tends to fall in your hands. Here are 6 ways to make your packing process a little less daunting.

  1. Don’t Procrastinate

This seems like an obvious one but with tasks that take a lot of work we tend to drag our feet when getting started. The best thing to do a few weeks prior to your move is to pack a couple boxes each day. Start with the nonessentials that you can go without and take the edge off of the amount of stuff you have to pack.

  1. Pack One Room at a Time

Packing room-by-room will help you break a large task down into smaller ones that feel much more easily attainable. This will also help to keep you organized and as you unpack, it’s like you’re transferring a room from your old home to your new one.

  1. Packing Labels

This one goes hand-in-hand with packing room by room. As you pack each room into boxes, use packing labels to label the boxes either by room or by the most significant items in the box.

  1. Use Packing Paper

Packing paper helps keep your items from getting damaged during transit. Use actual packing paper to pack your boxes and don’t use newspapers because the ink may bleed onto your belongings.

  1. Use Moving Boxes

Stop at your local Home Depot or Lowe’s store or any local mini storage for the best price on boxes. They’re designed for moving whereas boxes from somewhere else may not be able to hold the weight of your items.

There is also always the option to contact your local professional packers. Packing is one of the most overwhelming processes to tackle, so if you’re stuck you can always call O’Malley Moving. We can typically pack houses in 1-2 days, saving our customers time and stress and they can focus their energy on other tasks or simply enjoy the extra time!

  1. Moving Valuables

Be mindful of the things you can’t pack. Some items that would be better off personally transported are things like important documents, passports, and very fragile items.

There you have it! Implement these tips to help make your moving process a little less chaotic and full of anxiety. Moving can be very overwhelming and stressful so chip away at it, don’t procrastinate, and stay as organized as possible because unpacking is also half the battle!
